Just after its first anniversary as a freshly chartered chapter of MOPH, the North Georgia Chapter 826 began a project to place a fitting memorial to all Combat Wounded Veterans in the local Gilmer County Veterans Memorial Park in Ellijay, GA. Located about 75 miles Northwest of Atlanta, GA in the Southern Appalachians, Chapter 826, Patriot Tom Richardson searched the world over to find just the right components. He found a foundry in Pennsylvania that had a mold for a stunning bronze scroll and Purple Heart to top off the memorial. The original bronze mold was commissioned by a MOPH chapter in California. He found beautiful red granite from India and grey granite from Elberton, GA. Finally, he found just the right craftsmen at Whitener Monument Company to put it all together in nearby Blueridge, GA.
The new chapter had almost no funds in the bank so we began a fund drive which included a raffle quilt, donation cans and donations from local businesses. Local thrift store, Faith, Hope, and Charity, kick started our drive with a donation of $2,700.00
Chapter members constructed a mold and poured over 1,000 pounds of concrete for the footer which would be the base of the 1,600 pound memorial. The grey granite base was engraved with symbols representing the 5 branches of the military and set in place. The memorial was dedicated at a ceremony on Memorial Day, 2017 in front of more than 200 guests. Tom and Chapter President Mike Pilvinsky were the featured speakers at the ceremony. Since the red granite had not arrived from India by Memorial Day, a facsimile model was constructed and placed at the memorial site. About two months later, the final piece of the memorial arrived and was engraved and permanently place in Veteran’s Memorial Park. Patriot Larry Fraliex donated and erected a flagpole nearby and Patriot John Hanna purchased a “Combat Wounded” flag for permanent display in the park to complete the display.
